Governor, Grayson shining the light on state government

Gov. Steve Beshear and Secretary of State Trey Grayson both announced in early June that state government was heading toward more openness by making government records transparent.

Announcements were made June 6 that the governor would be signing an executive order that afternoon creating an E-Transparency Task Force, not long after Grayson's office announced the Secretary of State would hold a meeting June 9 to announce "Check It Out Kentucky!"

Don’t hide suicides from your readers

Suicide reports stir the strongest emotions among grieving families and friends. These stories prompt the most strident complaints that newspapers are sticking their nose into personal affairs. Newspapers also face resistance from authorities regarding release of information, even though cause of death is public information under many state laws.

Here's Why Advertising During A Recession Is Good Business

A few years ago when my wife was expecting our second son, we realized it was time to move our first born out of the nursery and into a regular bed. So, on a Saturday afternoon, we retrieved my old bunk-beds from my parent's attic. All we needed to do was buy a couple of new mattresses. The following morning, as we lingered over coffee and the Sunday paper, my wife pointed to several ads and exclaimed, "Look at all these sales. We picked the perfect time to buy a new mattress!"

Even a news guy can sell the Internet

I'm a news guy.

Sure, I sold ads for the two decades my wife and I owned weekly newspapers, and I wasn't bad at it. But my wife was a better salesman that I was. I handled most of the news.

When we launched our Web site in 2004, however, I handled all the ad sales as well as the news.

Increase Your Appeal To Readers—Have Fun With Numbers

I like having fun. And so, I believe, do newspaper readers who all too often are saturated with hyper-negativity, from murder and mayhem to petty celebrity gossip.

So it was refreshing this week to see the extra effort that the Chicago Tribune devoted to a story on the Chicago Bulls winning the rights to the first pick in the NBA draft on June 26.
