Some KPA-sponsored training opportunities for editorial staffs are coming up. The first will offer a couple of workshops on Kentucky’s Open Records Law. After that, we’re offering our first-ever KPA Citizen Journalist Workshop. KPA is teaming up with the Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues at UK to sponsor two one-day open-records workshops on May 29 and June 5. The first will be held in Lexington while the second workshop will be in Madisonville. Both dates are Thursdays. Attorneys, journalists and a representative of the attorney general’s office – all well versed on the state’s open records law – will relate their on-the-job experiences with the law and answer your questions. The Lexington workshop on May 29 will be in the Buckner Conference Room at The Herald-Leader. The June 5 workshop will be in the community meeting room at the Country Cupboard Restaurant in Madisonville. Both will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. local time. Be watching your e-mail for workshop registration information. Citizen Journalist Workshop Meanwhile, the first KPA Citizen Journalist Workshop will be held in September. An exact date and location for the one-day workshop will be announced later; however, it’s likely the site will be in Louisville or Lexington. Open to the public and journalists, the Citizen Journalist Workshop will cover basic newswriting, digital photography (still and video), basic AP Style and blogging. We anticipate a strong interest from individuals who want to be regular contributors to newspaper web sites. But we’re also opening the training to journalists who might want to have their own training sessions in their individual communities. The workshop will be limited to 20 people. Registration will be $39 per person, which includes lunch. More information on the Citizen Journalist Workshop will be announced later. Journalism Boot Camp The annual KPA Journalism Boot Camp, a week-long Journalism 101 course scheduled for July 7-11 in Frankfort, has been filled. Seven of the 15 students enrolled are employed by Kentucky newspapers. The others are interested in working for community newspapers or doing free-lance work. The boot camp will be held on the Kentucky State University campus. |
