Get ready for NNA’s 2008 contests

COLUMBIA, MO—It’s time for member newspapers to begin making a list and collecting their best issues, columns, ads, and photos for entry in the National Newspaper Association’s 2008 Better Newspaper Contest and Better Newspaper Advertising Contest, the premier national contests for community newspapers.

Early contest entries translate into a chance to win a prepaid debit card loaded with $300 and ONE free registration and “Toast to the Winners” ticket to the Annual Convention in Saint Paul, MN, Sept. 25-28, 2008 valued at more than $400. One winner will be drawn. Entries must be postmarked no later than March 1, 2008, to qualify. All of a newspaper’s entries must arrive before March 10, 2008 to be eligible. Each newspaper will earn one chance to win, no matter how many entries are submitted.

Here’s what some of our winners have to say:

“The contest gives small newspapers and their staffs a chance to shine.  We like receiving state and local awards also, but that ‘national’ title has a really nice ring to it.”

  1. Linda Ireland, Editor, The LaRue County Herald News, Hodgenville, KY

“There's a school of thought that contests are all about ego. But I think recognition by one's peers provides critical encouragement for an industry facing myriad challenges. At the end of the day, it still has to be about clear writing, impactful images and courageous reporting. Contests remind us that quality still counts.”

  1. Bill Barth, Editor, Beloit (WI) Daily News

“Only by going up against tough competition can you find out how good your work is and how much better it could be. Recognition in the BNC places you among the best.”

  1. Bob Mudge, Editor, Venice (FL) Gondolier Sun

Entries will be accepted beginning Jan. 1, and must be postmarked by Mar. 31, 2007. However, you may want to mark your calendars to send in your entries early so you can get those entries postmarked by Mar. 1 and won’t miss out your chance at winning this year’s early bird drawing.

Participation is limited to NNA member newspapers in good standing published Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2007, with one exception: web site categories, which are judged “in place.” There is no limit on the number of entries that may be submitted to the contest or in any one category.

Updated rules and forms will be available Jan. 1 online at: www.nna.org/Contests/bncmain.html.  A copy of the rules and entry form will also be included in the January and February issues of Publishers’ Auxiliary.

Established in 1885, the National Newspaper Association is the voice of America’s community newspapers and the largest newspaper association in the country. The nation’s community papers inform, educate and entertain nearly 150 million readers every week.
