The race among states to be first in selecting presidential candidates guarantees that holiday gatherings are likely to be interrupted by political telemarketers. The accelerated election season also means that newspapers must be prepared for all candidate announcements.

No. 1, newsrooms should have a standard format for candidate announcements, regardless of whether individuals are political newcomers or seeking their eighth term. No. 2, editors and reporters should have a process for approaching candidate interviews.

Newspaper influences during youth lead to higher rates of volunteering;
NAA Launches YouTube Contest to Engage Young Readers

Arlington, Va. – With the holidays fast approaching, the Newspaper Association of America Foundation has released new research demonstrating the pivotal role newspapers play in fostering civic engagement in their communities. As part of that engagement, volunteerism and philanthropy play major roles; nearly three-quarters (74 percent) of adults who used newspapers in school and read newspaper content aimed at teens donated money to a civic group or association in the last year (compared to 51 percent of those with no such exposure to newspapers).
