Georgetown paper announces staff changes

Josh Underwood has been named as the new managing editor of the Georgetown News-Graphic.

Underwood replaces Jim Joseph, who resigned to accept a position with Ashland Oil.

Underwood, who was promoted from sports editor, joined the News-Graphic in 1997 after graduating from George-town College.

Jeff Kerr has joined the Georgetown staff as news editor.

Kerr, who has 25 years experience in Kentucky journalism, was sports editor for The Winchester Sun for 17 years and served as the managing editor of the Clay City Times and the Citizen Voice & Times in Irvine.

Chris Hughes has been selected as the paper's new sports editor. He recently served as a sports reporter and photographer at the Community Press in Cincinnati.

Jessica Rouse has joined the staff as a general assignment reporter and photographer. A graduate of the University of Kentucky, Rouse has written for the Kentucky Kernel, The Lebanon Enterprise and the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Chris Johnson and Emily Rawdon will also hold reporting positions at the paper over the summer.

Larry See takes over Meade County Messenger post

A Michigan native has been hired as a staff writer for the Meade County Messenger, announced publisher Rena Singleton.

Larry See Jr. previously served as the editor and in managerial capacities for the Antrim County News, a division of Up North Publications.

While editor of the News, See covered community events governmental meetings and area school functions. He also served as a staff writer for a sister newspaper, the Leader and the Kalkaskian and copy-edited The Citizen-Journal newspaper.

Adam Vankirk named sports editor at Ashland

Adam VanKirk has taken over the duties of sports editor at The Independent in Ashland.

VanKirk began his career in journalism in 1998 and has worked for The Independent since 2004. The Kentucky Press Association has honored him and Ohio Newspaper Association for his work in news and sports.

During his career, he has worked as a sports writer, sports editor and assistant managing editor as well as a copy editor and design editor.

Harrodsburg paper honored by preservation group

The Harrodsburg Herald was honored at an awards dinner held by the James Harrod Trust.

The Herald received the Jane Bird Hutton Preservation Award given annually to those who have demonstrated exceptional interest and work in the preservation of historic sites and who has supported cultural development of Harrodsburg and Mercer County.

Herald Board of Directors member Grace Yunker and April Ellis, assistant general manager at The Herald, expressed appreciation to The Herald's customers and staff.

John Shindlebower named general manager/editor

John Shindlebower has been named general manager/editor of the Spencer Magnet in Taylorsville.

Shindlebower has been with the Magnet for four years where he has served as managing editor.

Shindlebower studied journalism at Eastern Kentucky University.

Franklin Dunn Schurz Jr. steps down as CEO

Franklin Dunn Schurz Jr. has announced his retirement as chief executive officer of Schurz Communications Inc.

He will remain the company's chairman of the board.

Todd Franklin Schurz has been selected to serve as the company's president and CEO.
