FBLA honors Letcher newspaper owners

Mike and Tina Whitaker were honored in May by the Future Business Leaders of America as business persons of the year.

The Whitakers and their businesses, Superior Printing Company and The News-Press of Cromona, have worked for the past several years with the statewide organization in preparing its annual program for the Kentucky Leadership Conference.

Tina Whitaker accepted the award during the 2007 Leadership Conference Awards ceremony in Louisville which was attended by over 2,000 students, advisors and business leaders from across the state.

Whitaker said she and her family were happy to support a program which encourages young people to explore the many aspects in the world of business.

"It is exciting to see the experience that FBLA students gain by participating in not only the FBLA-sponsored competition but in the day-to-day operations of their local chapters as well," Whitaker said.

During her association with the organization, Whitaker said she's been touched by everyone involved.

"I was most impressed with the events I was able to observe during the state competition and enjoyed my time in assisting a local chapter in Greenup County with a fund raiser which helped fun the trip to Louisville for the 27 students who earned their way to the state competition," Whitaker said.

Whitaker said she hopes that when the new vocational wing is added to Letcher County High School that it will provide an opportunity for more students in her community to participate in FBLA programs.
