First ever event of its kind
Kentucky to host summit on rural journalism

The first national conference on rural journalism will be held April 19-21 at the Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, a restored 19th Century agricultural community near Harrodsburg.

The National Summit on Journalism in Rural America is sponsored by the Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues, with primary support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and additional support from Farm Foundation and the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation.

Speakers will include a top expert in rural issues, the top news executives of three newspaper groups with many rural readers, an editor from the Appalachian coalfields who recently became part of a new chain, and three independent editors whose coverage, commentary and ideas are examples to follow. For the detailed program, go to http://www.uky.edu/CommInfoStudies/IRJCI/Summit.htm

A highlight of the event will be the presentation of the Tom and Pat Gish Award to the Ezzell family of The Canadian (Texas) Record. The guest speaker at the award dinner will be John Seigenthaler Sr. of the First Amendment Center. Space at the summit is limited and attendance is by invitation only, but there will be plenty of additional seating at the dinner (tickets are $75) and invitations to the summit can still be extended. If you are interested in attending the dinner or conference, contact Institute Director Al Cross at (859) 257-3744 or e-mail him at al.cross@uky.edu.
