Two Nicholas County newspapers join forces, combine efforts

Carlisle and Nicholas County will now be served by only one in-county newspaper. The Nicholas News and The Nicholas Countian & The Carlisle Mercury have been sold to M.C. Investments. The company took control March 1.

The newspaper will be published under a new, single flag, The Carlisle Mercury, The Nicholas County News.

The phone number to reach The Mercury will be (606) 289-6425. The fax number will be (606) 289-4000.

M.C. Investments is owned by Chris McGehee, who also owns the Breckinridge County Herald-News.

It has been announced that Hank Bond will remain as publisher.

The Mercury is Nicholas County’s second oldest continuing business founded in 1867, second only to Deposit Bank of Carlisle.

The Fisher family holds the longest tenure of continuous ownership, owning the publication through two generations from 1913 to 1987.

The Nicholas Countian & The Carlisle Mercury has served the county for more nearly 13 years.

The Nicholas News was first published July 1, 2005.

“It is the mission of the new company to provide readers and advertisers with absolutely the very best product with each edition,” Bond said. As time goes by the items added will add value to the product, he said.
