Ben Franklin Nominations Due February 23 It's time for Ben Franklin nominations. The Ben Franklin Award is sponsored by the U.S. Postal Service and given out by the National Newspaper Association at its Government Affairs Conference in March. It honors outstanding service to newspapers by local postal employees. Recipients are honored at the state level and one postal employee is selected from the entrants to receive the Ben Franklin Award. Information on nominating a local postal employee is below. If you have a nomination, better hurry. The deadline is Friday, February 23. Who do you nominate? --- A mail carrier, clerk, personnel in the business mail acceptance offiice or a postal employee who has gone above and beyond to deliver or help deliver your newspaper. The recognition often encourages postal employees who are as frustrated with the system as we are to go the extra mile to do all they can do. In selecting the national winner, the Ben Franklin judges look for signs that the USPS person is involved in the community in other ways outside the job. Why do you need to nominate someone? --- The Postal Service donates $28,000 to GAC to promote the Ben Franklin Award. In spite of our recent battles with USPS we need good relations with them. This award is a great way to keep the communications pipeline open between NNA and USPS. I don't want to nominate any Postal worker for an award. They can't get my newspaper delivered across the country in a timely manner. --- This award will most likely go to a local postal worker. The vast majority of the time, local postal workers do a great job in getting our newspapers delivered. (We all can agree that the problems with delivery begin when our newspapers go onto a postal truck). Take a few minutes to get your Ben Franklin Award nominee in motion. Nominations must be received by February 23. I'm getting started on my nomination today. As always thank you for your time and effort in supporting NNA.
