Five more find home in Kentucky hall of fame
Journalism Hall of Fame announces newest inductees

Four journalists and a journalism educator will be inducted into the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame April 10, at the Radisson Plaza hotel in Lexington.

The five will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at a luncheon ceremony sponsored by the UK Journalism and Telecommunications Alumni Association.

J. T. Hurst

J.T. Hurst, who is currently the publisher of the Barbourville Advocate, has had an amazing 53 years in journalism.

Hurst was with the Middlesboro Daily News for a little over 51 years before retiring in September 2005.

Kentucky dodged a couple of bullets in mid-January when it experienced back-to-back train derailments involving explosions, big fires and hazardous chemicals. Fortunately, there were no fatalities or serious injuries in either incident but there were evacuations and massive disruptions to businesses and people’s personal lives

First Amendment issues at heart of Kentucky appeals court decisions

Two decisions were recently rendered by the Kentucky Court of Appeals concerning First Amendment issues.

The first decision, Darcie Divita v. John Ziegler and Clear Channel Broadcasting, Inc. d/b/a 84 WHAS Radio, rendered Jan. 5, concerned the element of actual malice in an intentional infliction of emotional distress claim of a public figure.

KPA Ad Contest deadline set for March 9

March 9 is the deadline to enter the Advertising Excellence in Kentucky Newspapers - 2007 competition. The contest will be judged in mid-April by the West Virginia Press Association and awards will be announced at the 2007 Spring Ad Seminar, tentatively scheduled for May 17-18

Courier-Journal staffer wins NAA fellowship

The Newspaper Association of America has chosen eight newspaper-industry professionals to participate in the first half of its 2007 Marketing Fellowship program. The fellowships are presented once a year and are designed to broaden opportunities for minority professionals to advance their careers in newspaper management. The program began 27 years ago, and more than 1,000 newspaper professionals have participated in it.
