Want a Master's in Community Journalism If you're interested in getting a master's degree in Community Journalism, here's your opportunity. Former Alabama Press Association executive director Bill Keller, who is now teaching at the University of Alabama Department of Journalism, has established the nation's first on-site master's degree program for community journalism. The power of teamwork There's an old story about a man whose car got stuck in a ditch. He went to a nearby farmhouse for help, and the farmer said, "Maybe Jasper can help. Jasper is my blind mule." The farmer hitched the mule to the car, stepped back and shouted, "Pull, Deacon! Pull, Nellie! Pull, Cleo! Pull, Jasper!" Sure enough, the mule dragged the car out of the ditch.
By the time you read this, the Illinois Press Association will have finished judging the Excellence in Kentucky Newspapers - 2006 competition. But it wasn't an easy task. I’ve received a lot of good questions from readers lately. Let me share a few. From Denise, New York: We have a pesky problem. We can search by content on our local hard drives, but not (Adobe) InCopy documents. Our I.T. staff person said that spotlight doesn’t recognize InCopy documents as text documents. This has been a major pain in the neck. We stopped keeping a paper clip file several years ago. Since we lost the ability to search our files by content, we are really handicapped in our research and reporting efforts. Do you know of a solution to this problem? Any insights/advice you can give me are much appreciated.

Woody and Chloe, co-authors of Tails from the Bluegrass and this semester's Tails from the Bluegrass II have been making their rounds across the Bluegrass. Here's Woody's report, as told to his "mom," Leigh Anne Florence, on his travels: Is yours a ‘We publish’ Web site? Or a ‘You publish’ site? Look at the hot, well-known Internet sites of the day. What do they have in common? With some notable exceptions Google and Yahoo (although a case could be made for them, too) most of the sites that are in the news these days are “you publish” Web sites. “You publish” means the site is a facilitator for content, rather than a publisher of its own content. |
